Pubilc Art Proposal

The Red Cougar

The University of Houston's School of Art is an art building with no artwork on the outside walls.

As a visual artist, I would love to add some substance to these walls, and give one traveling something more to look at than their phones.

I plan to paint the School's Mascot in the Color Red, in example,

With myself and 4 partners I'd select, timing wouldn't be an issue (estimated 16 hour job). The estimated width and height of The Red cougar is 10ft tall, and 8ft wide, perhaps taking a gallon of Cad medium Red, Mars Black, And Titanium White - all acrylic. Restoration is an issue we could negotiate, because I thought it would be fun to letting the cougar be restored by new art majors every ten years. The asking cost, including materials, stipend work for all artists included, and time would roughly be $10,000.

The Cycle of Mail Art

I received my letter to myself last week and found a new addition to my "Mail Art". The top picture is in class on the first day and the bottom is on my kitchen table sixteen weeks later.

Student Show at the Blaffer

After going to all the spots around Houston for extra credit, I made it to the student show at the Blaffer. I snapped two pictures of my favorite pieces which happened to be by both Kevo and Gladys! Sorry that my pictures don't do them justice, I get nervous taking pictures in museums.

Monumental Moments at Buffalo Bayou Park

Okay so, I hiked all around Buffalo Bayou Park and I know I have seen the other "monuments" or words before, but I could not find them! So here is the only one I found in a clearing nearby the Tolerance sculptures. I am definitely going to go back and make it my mission to find the other sculptures hiding in the park.

Tolerance at Buffalo Bayou Park

I've always really loved these sculptures at Buffalo Bayou Park, but I never knew the meaning behind them.

James Turrell Skyspace at Rice University

I was really impressed by the Skyspace at Rice University. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay for the light show at sunset, because I had more extra credit points I needed to attend to, but I am looking forward to returning sometime soon.

James Turrell Tunnel

Finally visited the James Turrell Tunnel at the MFA and it was pretty amazing. Definitely trippy too, kinda made me a little dizzy walking back into the bright white museum. However, the collection they have before the tunnel had to be my favorite part, it highlights the epic events of last year starting from Harvey and ending with the Astros winning the World Series. It was really cool to see that memorialized in a museum.

Art Car Parade

Here are some pictures from the art car parade. There were so many amazing cars and you could tell that some put a lot of time into the creation of these. It was incredible.

Alton Dulaney Art

I love the concept behind Artist A.D. Questioning art and pushing it's limits by simply labeling it as Art. Brilliant!

Splendora Gardens Opening

I drove out to Splendora on Sunday to see the opening of the exhibition. There were so many breathtaking pieces; I’ve always loved art involving flowers, so I was thrilled to see such a vast variety of them all in one place.

Here are two that I fell in love with immediately:

I believe that bottom one is priced at $5,000 (!!!!!!!), but it’s utterly gorgeous. I hope I’ll be able to paint like that one day!

Art Car Parade

I went to see the Art Car Parade on Saturday (though it was only for a short time)! It was honestly incredible to see that many people lined up along the street, and even more incredible to see all the amazing cars (some of them were absolutely hilarious).

Here are some of my favorites:

go GAO ... go GAO ... GO gao

So I went to Gao’s fluorescent bear’s work the day it was exhibited and I told him it reminded me of the story .. “ The Very Hungry Caterpillar “ ... GAO has also never heard of “ Slime “ on Nickelodeon and he doesn’t like a lot of American Art. So I find it very interesting that his work is pretty much just American as we are all very familiar with.

This is my favorite piece at the show, but my favorite contemporary painting artist at the Show was Charis ...

Statue of Four Lies

I went by myself during the night time to see this and it was honestly kind of scary. The statues are just really in your face and life-size that it seems a little intimidating. I was really intrigued and want to find out more about these four lies. I'm very curious to find out if there's really a time capsule.

Wortham Beads

I went to go see the beads right after we talked about them in class. They were so cool, I loved how you could just walk under them and get a totally different perspective. I had to fight the urge to get a stick and run it through them, that's the kind of feeling it gives me I guess. I didn't want to destroy the piece... just play with it. You know?

BIG HEAD!

YES GUYS!

I was able to go today (WOOHOO) cuz I ditched work early! Sadly they don't let you go to the second floor but it looks so cool! I felt like at any moment it would talk to me.

Alebrijes

For those who do not know what Alebrijes are they imaginary creatures that have elements from different animals such as dragon bodies, bat wings, wolf teeth and dog eyes. Colorfully painted, they were originally made with papier mache but nowadays they are also wood carved.
