text ART

For our assignment on text ART, I wanted to talk about a piece that I had the pleasure of seeing at the Louvre two summers ago.  Joseph Kosuth's ‘Neither Appearance nor Illusion’ (‘ni apparence ni illusion’) The neon light text installation was located within the excavated portion of the medieval Louvre. I thought that the mixture of the medieval stones and the curved luminescence of the words upon the walls were mesmerizing. The works are meant to draw the visitor into the mysterious subterranean location within the museum with appropriating texts from a variety of sources: literature, anthropology, poetry, etc.

Light Art

For my light art piece I wanted to create the illusion of a faux light source, tricking the viewer into believing sunlight was piercing through.  This worked to some effect, although not too evidently in photo, because my roommate believed light was coming from the cupboard under the stairs and had a confused look on his face.

Time art

For my time art piece I chose some work of my own that I made about a year ago.  I created two circular forms, using collected hair, weave, permanent hair relaxer, and pomade.  This piece was created as a commentary on Black hair care and self perception. Permanent hair relaxer not only takes away from the natural curly texture of Black hair, but sometimes has more damaging effects, such as hair falling out or being destroyed.

On the left hand side is an image of the circle after being given a fresh treatment of permanent relaxer, while the right hand side, a less vibrant circle, has had the relaxer sitting for a duration of 6 months.

Trash art

Trash art

For my trash art assignment I grabbed the bag of Mardi Gras beads and created the following piece.

time art

I love the concept of freezing the frame without actually taking a picture or painting the moment. By using the strobe you can achieve the illusion of a still shot of

In a darkened room, there is a pool of water on the floor and water dripping from the ceiling into the pool. This is what you know when you step into the room. But it is lit only with strobe light, so all you have are flashes of information as to what you are seeing. The strobe light freezes the movement of the water drops, in an endless variation. It is like seeing time stopped. The effect is mesmerizing and magical. Along with the slight coolness of the room and the scent of cool fresh water, it becomes a transcendent moment.

Trash Art

With the objects given to me I had a hard time deciding what I was going to create. That was until my daughter and my younger cousin showed me a project that they had been working on that day. They had been painting pinecones to make them look like flowers. I loved them so much that it became the inspiration for this weeks project. Here is my blue flower, grown with love...
